Saturday 16th August :

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round : The long road to Wembley started today with 8 Peninsula league sides in action in the worlds oldest Cup competition. Three sides are safely through, three departed at the first hurdle and two have midweek replays to look forward to.

The three victorious sides all defeated Western League opposition as they again showed that the Peninsula League is as easily as strong as the supposed higher status Toolstation competition. Tavistock who lost in the league 7-1 last weekend went away to Step 5 side Ilfracombe Town who were 8th last term and roundly trounced the North Devon side on their own patch with a 4-1 scoreline to set up a trip to Larkhall Athletic in the next round. Launceston also comfortably saw off another Step 5 Western League Premier outfit in Sherborne beating the Dorset side 3-0 at Pennygillam to grab an attractive home tie against Southern League Paulton Rovers in a fortnights time. Completing the hat-trick of wins was Bodmin Town who travelled to Elmore, the only Step 6 club in Devon or Cornwall that are not members of the Peninsula League and it was Bodmin who showed which is the stronger competition with an easy 4-0 win that included a brace from Mark Berry. So emphatic was the result that Bodmin keeper Kevin Miller did not have to make a single save until the 83rd minute, with the win assured Elmore reverted to a physical pattern of play and it was no surprise when Kevin Mills received a straight red for striking a Bodmin Town player. Bodmin can now look forward to a very attractive home tie with Southern League Bridgwater on the 30th of August.

Two sides made the long trips to Dorset and lived to fight another day with Falmouth Town drawing 2-2 at Wessex League Shaftesbury and Saltash United drawing 2-2 at Western League Gillingham Town. The Ashes have their replay on Tuesday night with Falmouth home on Wednesday night.

Three sides did depart from the Cup, Wadebridge Town who were making their first appearance in the Cup since being promoted in the Summer to Step 6 lost heavily at Willand Rovers who were 3rd in the Western League Premier last time out. Liskeard Athletic fell to a 0-5 reverse at home to Larkhall Athletic and St Blazey went down 0-2 at home to Wessex League side Hamworthy United.

Premier Division : With sides on Cup duty the Premier programme was reduced to just 5 matches and 1 of those, Elburton Villa v Clyst Rovers, fell victim to the wet weather. In the games that were played Torpoint Athletic went to the top of the embroyonic league table with a 2-1 win away at Newton Abbot as the Cornish side now have 7 points from their opening 3 game. Cullompton Rangers were playing just their 2nd game and they have maximum points after a very impressive 3-1 win at home to highly fancied Plymouth Parkway. Buckland Athletic are also making good progress after losing their opening game they won their 2nd match this week with a 5-0 scoreline over visiting Holsworthy. One game ended all square with Witheridge and Ivybridge Town finishing 1-1 at Edge Down Park.

Division 1 East : A full programme of games in the Eastern section saw all 18 sides playing and amongst these were the three new clubs. Two of them, Royal Marines and Bovey Tracey, met each other at Endurance Park and in a staggering scoreline the South Devon visitors won by a 7-4 margin, Simon Revell netting a hat-trick. Exeter Civil Service were also i action for the first time and they drew 2-2 away at Axminster Town.

Reigning Champions Budleigh Salterton carried on where they left off from with a 4-2 win away at Crediton United and had both Danny Hall and Danny Williams on target. Buckfastleigh Rangers who were the only side not to win a single away game last season corrected that on the opening day with a 1-0 victory at Exmouth Town. Highly fancied Stoke Gabriel started off with a comfortable 4-0 win at home to a Totnes & Dartington side who have had a summer of upheaval whilst Appledore also started well with a 5-1 win away at the University of Exeter.

Okehampton Argyle had a goal scoring frenzy away at Liverton United where the Okes triiumphed by a 6-3 margin although Galmpton Gents, playing their first game in their new guise, had a more sober 2-0 win at home to Teignmouth. In an East Devon Derby Ottery St Mary were no match for Alphington with the Exeter based visitors running out 3-0 victors.

Division 1 West : The wet weather caused the postponement of 3 matches with Callington, Porthleven and Vospers Oak Villa all calling off their games and that added to the midweek departure of Goonhavern who were due to have been in action at Mousehole meant only 5 games were played today, New boys Godolphin Atlantic settled into life with a good 3-0 win at home to Plymstock United who were also playing their first game in Division 1 West, the other new side, Truro City Reserves, gained an away point with a 1-1 draw at Wendron United.

Highly fancied Penzance got off to a winning start with an emphatic 4-0 win at home to Penryn Athletic whilst Camelford who finished 4th last season started with a good 3-1 away win at Foxhole Stars. Last years cellar dwellers, St Austell are tipped to do a lot better this time round and they started their season with a 3-2 win at home to Millbrook.

Friday 15th August :

Premier Division : Dartmouth played their first league match under the new Longcross floodlights this evening and marked the occasion with a 3-0 win over Newton Abbot Spurs. In front of around 160 supporters the Darts scored all 3 goals in a 10 minute spell either side of half time with John Rimmer scoring in both the 43rd and 48th minutes and Gareth Davis notching the other between those 2 goals.
